Questions

In your coaching experience, what are some important questions that you have learned to ask and how did you determine they were important?

"What do you think? How do you think it went?" and I agree with Jason's "What do you need?" The first two questions get the teacher thinking about the lesson. The last question always helps me interact with teachers who have been reluctant to ask for help or ideas.
Another very important question is "What do you want the students to know how to do/learn?"

I have found it very helpful to ask teachers about their beliefs about students. This opens the door to their views on pedagogy, social issues, discipline... an array of insights into the teacher's professional belief systems. I have also found it helpful to ask questions about the effectiveness of practices. Some examples are when teachers tell me that they don't do group work, I ask how is single row, silent work effective for them in getting across their content, preparing for EOC, meeting standards, etc... Usually that takes us where I thought it would go - a conversations about management! I have found that questions geared to making teachers think about how their personal/professional beliefs drive their teaching choices and questions centered around effectivness are really helpful getting teachers to metacognate about their practice. Now... if these things would just get some folks to change!!!

I like to get my teachers thinking about how a strategy can change their pedagogy. I like to push them to think about change and being a change agent for school.
